Many people underestimate the importance of hydration. Most people don’t realize the importance of drinking water. To help identify the importance of water to the body, the Redwood Club has outlined many of the important reasons why you should make sure to always be properly hydrated.

Hydrate for Physical Health

Hydrating is crucial because water is what regulates your body temperature. It also lubricates your joints and transports nutrients to your body’s cells, which helps keep you healthy and feeling energized. Also, the transport of nutrients is required for you to build muscle, which is why if you don’t hydrate , you will experience things such as fatigue, dizziness/lightheadedness, muscle cramps and more! If you are someone that suffers from charlie horses or muscle spasms, you may already know this, but the cause is often dehydration. This is because as your body becomes dehydrated, your muscles become deprived of electrolytes and as a result, begin to cramp up. To keep yourself energized, healthy and feeling fit, make sure you drink plenty of fluids so that your body stays hydrated!

Hydrate for Mental & Emotional Health

Dehydration has a negative impact on your brain because when you are dehydrated, your circulation will slow. When circulation decreases, so does the amount of oxygen traveling to various parts of your body including your brain. The worse your dehydration gets, the more your cognitive functioning will decline. In fact, when dehydration is severe, it can lead to delirium or loss of consciousness. Although mild dehydration is less severe, it also negatively impacts the way your brain functions and processes information. It can also negatively affect mood. In fact, all it takes for the negative consequences to creep in is to have a level of hydration that is only one percent lower than what is optimal.

Hydrate for Weight Loss

Did you know that staying hydrated can help you lose weight? This is because drinking water helps you feel fuller, which contributes to eating less. Also, by drinking just water, you avoid consuming excess calories found in beverages such as sodas, juices, sports drinks and smoothies. Drinking cold water also offers the benefit of slightly increasing your metabolism, which is another perk. This is because your body has to work a little bit harder to warm the water for proper digestion. With that being said, drinking water won’t directly lead to weight loss, but it will help when combined with a proper diet and exercise plan.

 

How to Know if You are Staying Properly Hydrated

With all of these important reasons for staying properly hydrated, it is important to understand how to keep yourself adequately hydrated. One of the most common ways to check is to conduct a skin test. To do this, pinch a roll of skin on the back of your hand (beneath your knuckles). If the skin is slow to rebound (become flat again), this is a sign that you need to hydrate better. Another way to check is to inspect the color of your urine. If your urine is yellow and cloudy, it is a sign that you should drink more water. If your urine is mostly clear, consider yourself in the clear because that signifies you are properly hydrating. Other more unusual signs to watch for include having bad breath, brain fog, tiredness, dry skin, muscle cramping, fever with chills, cravings for sweet foods and headaches.

Staying hydrated is paramount to your mental and physical health so make sure you are drinking the proper amount of water throughout the day. The recommended amount of water agreed upon by health professionals is 8, 8-ounce glasses of water each day. This is equal to 2 liters or ½ gallon. Properly hydrating allows you to be the best version of yourself. Hydration is essential to your physical, emotional and mental health. For optimal performance in all realms, remember to drink, drink, drink throughout the day!
